May 12

Good morning. Wow! We are almost half-way through the month. Time is flying. Mary and I hope all is well with you.

Yesterday, as we all know, was Mother's Day. Although the words from English to Spanish are different, the meaning is the same; it is a day to honor our moms. However, in the details there is a world of difference. In the USA it is "Mother's Day". In Puerto Rico it is "MOTHER'S DAY!!!" This is a major event in Puerto Rico's calendar. After Christmas, Three Kings Day and Good Friday and perhaps...maybe... Easter Sunday, this is the most celebrated event in the year.

Interpretive dance
While churches in the States may offer cake and punch or a token for all the mothers, here it is celebrated in a much bigger way. All the mothers dress "up to the nines" for the day and enjoy the homage accorded them.

At our church, two of our young college age women did a beautiful job with an interpretive dance. Then, while a slide show of the mothers was presented, a gift of a flower and a bag of cosmetics was given to each one. After our worship director had finished a visualized sermon to the mothers, we enjoyed a dinner cooked and served by the men.

The attendance was excellent...one-hundred and twenty-six was the number we put on the statistics board.

Full house
This Friday we have a church camp out. To my surprise, forty have signed up to brave the "wilds" for a night on the church lawn. It should be a great evening.

Thanks for taking time to read the blog. Until next time...

Johnathan and Mary Reece
